Just down the street from where we live, a local producer is selling them out of the back of her car every afternoon. These luscious little fruits have nothing to do with the bland and often bruised strawberries that are imported from large scale farming operations in Spain. There are the real McCoy or rather Gariguette.

Gariguettes are the first strawberry varietal of the season here and a sure sign that winter is over. They are elongated, rather small, a little on the orange side, and very flavorful and sweet. These are best eaten as is, with maybe a touch of lime juice or balsamic vinegar if you are feeling bold.

So it's official, le printemps est arrivé and it is time to gorge on the gariguettes.

Mar 1, Dining With The Emperor

You may already know that coq au vin means rooster in wine. Maybe you also know that it one of the easiest French dinners around. But do you know how this famous dish originated?

Many regions of France claim coq au vin as their invention, but one of the most colorful of legends gives none other than Julius Caesar credit for first soaking the rooster in wine. The story goes that a village belonging to the Gauls (the ancient people of France) gifted the Roman emperor with a rooster, a symbol of strength for the proud Frenchmen. The next day the leader of the village was invited to dine with Caesar. He of course figured he had won over the Romans and would have no more problems with the conquering emperor. However, after a delicious dinner, Caesar revealed that they had just dined on the first ever coq au vin. We can well imagine how angry the Gauls must have felt, but apparently they liked the dish, as it has persisted as part of French cuisine for more than 2000 years.

In case you are wondering, AOP stands for appellation d'origine controlee, the European standard for a high quality product. What do you think? (I say you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.)
